XXL CONSTRUCTIONS was commissioned by the team from the ADF’s Army Aboriginal Community Assistance Programme (AACAP), funded by the Government’s Indigenous Advancement Strategy to design, engineer, and supply the steel roof structure to protect the local basketball court in the remote Indigenous community of Laura, FNQ.

The XXL  CONSTRUCTIONS engineered design included workshop drawings,  detailing, and RPEQ engineer certification. Taking full advantage of the enormous cost saving benefits of XXL CONSTRUCTIONS patented SMRT® hybrid connection design solution, ensured this building was significantly efficient and affordable.  The SMRT® hybrid connection design solution allowed strong and rigid steel hot-rolled columns to transition efficiently and effectively to the cold form steel rafters of this massive portal frame. Utilising the SMRT® hybrid connection design solution assured the engineering brief was met for the span required and importantly enabled the materials cost savings needed to maintain the project’s budget.

The 200-strong contingent of Army members, together with multinational elements from Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste and Tonga, spent five months living and working in the Far North Queensland town of Laura to deliver infrastructure, vocational skills training, and health care to this remote Indigenous community. During that time, soldiers from a variety of Army trades and professions constructed a waste water disposal system, a multi-purpose facility, new footpaths, and the XXL CONSTRUCTIONS designed, engineered, and supplied steel roof structure over the local basketball court.

In delivering these projects, the men and women of the Australian Army served Laura providing assistance and opportunity at home as they do overseas. XXL CONSTRUCTIONS was extremely proud to be a contributor to this worthy endeavour.
